Small snails, Scraps of Paper, and Peace of Mind
Language is strange. Sometimes we borrow from others, and sometimes we just make things up as we go.
Take Escargot, for example. That word has always been synonymous with eating cooked snails in France. So, naturally, when I was on the MoveXpress site to make a payment and the word Escrow popped up, I honestly thought for a second I might be paying for mini snails.
As it turns out, the word is adopted from the French, but it actually means a “scrap of paper.” Now, when I’m just trying to pay a service company to move my stuff, I’m not really looking to buy snails or pieces of paper!
In reality, “Escrow” is a term used worldwide to mean that the money you pay is secured by a Third-Party Payment Provider approved by the banks and the industry.
MoveXpress uses TradeSafe to manage this for us. They store your funds in a secure digital “vault” (the escrow account). The money sits there safely until both the payer and the service provider agree that the job is complete. Only then are the funds released.
What if things go wrong? Should there be a dispute, the funds are reserved and held safely until the matter is finalized. No one runs off with the cash while the job is half-done.
